IP, Hon-man

A multi-talented musician, Ip, Hon-man is currently the Artistic and Music Director of the Hong Kong Metropolitan Pop Orchestra and the Director of the Hong Kong Musical Instrument Research Centre. He is also a visiting lecturer at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Through his unique insights in culture, Mr. Ip has developed a distinctive form of artistic and musical expression.

Since the age of nine, Mr. Ip has been active in musical performance, solo, conducting, and ensemble playing, performing extensively from China to Canada. He is also being judge for different competitions around the world.

As a violin maker and collector, Mr. Ip received a Silver Medal for Viola Craftsmanship at the Violin Maker's of Arizona International, USA in October 2024, and a Merit for Viola Craftsmanship from the Southern Violin Makers Association in 2025 March. Furthermore, at the Violin Maker's of Arizona International, USA Violin Making Competition in October 2025, he won a Gold and a Silver Medal for Tone in the Quartet category, a Silver Medal for Tone, Craftsmanship, and Varnish in the Viola category, a Silver Medal for Craftsmanship and Varnish in the Violin category, and an Award of Merit for Tone in the Violin category, a total of six awards. Back in 2016 and 2017, he held two violin exhibitions at the Hong Kong City Hall Exhibition Hall in 2016 and 2017. Mr. Ip also produced a book about master Chinese violin makers and a CD showcasing their violins.

During his time of teaching at local schools, he focused on violin and viola instruction. His students have won numerous local and international awards. Many of them have gone on to become music directors and university professors around the world.
